Rain at a Wedding

Your dream venue is booked, your favourite flowers have been ordered and you envisage drinks and canapés on the lawn under a warm afternoon sun. However the one thing you can’t control is the weather and with Sydney’s recent downpours we’ve learnt one thing – be prepared!

After many years in the wedding business we’ve put together a list of tried and tested tips to ensure that your special day is as memorable and joyous whether the sun is shining or the rain is bucketing. Always have a contingency plan, never just risk it!

  • Marquees. While there is nothing more romantic and special than an outdoor celebration, a marquee will alleviate any stress and disappointment created by unforseen weather.
  • Plan transportation. Your Jimmy Choo heels and designer gown should not be the victim of mud and rain. Ensure cars are available for the bridal party and look at booking buses, this is a great way of transporting guests from the ceremony to the reception.
  • Wedding photos. Have a plan B. Should the ocean headland, rolling farm hills or park setting be a wash out, the moment can be just as well captured inside, find an alternate venue that equally reflects you.
  • Outside services. While many couples dream of exchanging their vows in beautiful gardens or rolling country hills, be prepared to say ‘I Do’ undercover. The moment will be just as special and definitely more enjoyable for you and your guests.
  • Umbrellas. Have umbrellas ready for guests should the weather look ominous. It is the perfect temporary solution for providing cover should the skies open.
  • Alert guests. Email is a great way to inform your guests of changes in wedding plans due to bad weather. With our tech savvy population this is the best way to instantly advise of alternate arrangements.
  • Be flexible. The rain in NSW has had a direct impact on the flowers available for our weddings. The damage to crops has meant that the most popular flowers are no longer available – David Austin Roses, Gardenias, Hydrangeas and Dahlias have particularly been affected by the unusual weather. Work with your florist and be prepared to substitute should the situation arise.
